Moving on after 7 Years and 8 Months
9.5 years ago, I came to this country. 8.5 years ago, we got our first house on rent. 7.5 years ago, we moved in to this flat which we are renting now. And oh boy what a journey that has been.
Lets just clarify a few things, we live in a flat above a shop on a parade. I’ve never exclusively said where I lived until now, nor do most of my friends know where I live. So this is the first time I am talking about it and safe to say, I am pretty nervous and excited.
We moved to this place on 9th May 2007. Before coming here though, we were in a situation where we had already moved out of the old house but didn’t get hold of the keys to the new flat because the old tenants had not left. This meant that we had to stay at our friends’ house for a short while. 7.5 years on, we have to empty this flat but the new flat is not ready yet, and this means we have to stay at someone else’s place for a while too.
But these past seven and half years have been something that I will not forget; doing Puja’s on what was left of the fireplace, making one of the seats on the sofa as the place where only I sit (just like Sheldon from TBBT), having people from all over the world and then having to share the only rooms we have with them. Its been a great journey…
We’ve had people come and go in our neighbourhood. We’ve seen shops come and go too. We don’t know who our neighbours are because they change quite frequently. However, there are quite a few regular people on our parade who we know quite well and we’ll really miss them. We don’t know them, never talked to them outside of our parade, nor have we invited them over, the only relationships we have with these people is we are on the same parade. You see them every day on your way to school, work, parties and all we exchange is a few “Hi”s and “How are you”s and I know for sure, we will miss that a lot.
My parents started their home business at this flat. They started an online shop to buy and sell stuff. This meant dealing with postmen. Until now, we have had a number of postmen who we’ve got to know quite well. They would never miss bringing/taking our parcels and never complain if something was wrong. I guess moving to a different area will change that too. There are so many memories that make it worth the while to stay on such a busy parade.
When we moved in to this flat, the shop downstairs was a Café, then it turned into an Indian takeaway restaurant, then after a while, they changed the name of it, now a new person has come along and made it in to a Steak house. We’ve seen it through from a Café to a steak house (some of you might have figured out where I live :P) and I guess now its time for the flat owners above to change too. We’ve had issues with the restaurant really blasting the music late at night, not allowing us to sleep. The shop owner would put loud old Indian music on every night and then we had to call to tell him to put the volume down but after a while, those songs were the ones that helped us sleep at night. It was like the radio, just louder and with no presenter and the same music every single day. I think I am going to miss that… Just some tunes on in the background that help me sleep.
In the past few years, things have started to break down in the house. I guess it happens everywhere. We’ve had a few problems here and there but after living in this house for 7.5 years, I can safely say that 30A will be a part of me for my whole life. This is where I grew up, this is where I got my first job from, this is where I went to university from and I think now is the correct time to move on. We moved in on the 9th, we’re moving out on the 9th… Just 7 years and 8 months along.
We have bought our first ever flat. It is currently being built and after a really tough 2 months, it is really something we are looking forward to. We reserved the flat in October and now it is January, the time has moved along and the excitement for the new flat is building. But at the same moment, we will be leaving behind a bunch of memories in 30A.
Thanks a lot!
